Who am I!
I am Jules EVANS and I am currently doing a PhD at IRIT. I am part of the NumPEx project and more precisly the Exa-SofT branch.
The title is “Energy-aware HPC Scheduling”, that is to say I work with HPC cluster RJMSs (Resource and Job Management Software).
I am trying to make them minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions rather than completion time.

My Journey
- After high school, I went to what the french call “class prépa” which is really intense math, physics and engineering courses.
At the end of the tow years, the students undergo a competition for engineering schools. The first gets to choose first and so on and so forth.
- I landed in Bordeaux at Enseirb-Matméca in the Comp-Sci departement.
- I had the opportunity to study one semester in Valparaíso, Chile and to do an intership in Osaka, Japan.
- I specialized in HPC (High Performance Computing).
Work Experiences
Internships
- Inria Bordeaux Sud-Ouest Worked with Amina GUERMOUCHE, in the porting of PAPI-like features on AMD for power consumption reading.
The initial goal was to directly use PAPI to read the chip’s msr registers and to use the readings in a tool DUF(Dynamic Uncore Frequency) which scales the CPU uncore frequencies in an attempt to reduce energy consumption.
However, AMD chip’s power reading wasn’t implemented yet, so I had to do it by hand which took the entire time of the internship.
- Rokken Osaka Japan: Building of a rendering library for volumetric representations of solids.
Raymarching was used and it needed an octree to improve performance.
I saw what a C/C++ pipepline was and how to work with it and learned to code graphical applications using OpenGL.
